Sacks was born in London, England in 1933. He attended Queen's College, Oxford, where he studied medicine. After graduating from medical school, Sacks moved to the United States, where he completed his residency in neurology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
In 1966, Sacks published his first book, Migraine. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it established Sacks as a leading authority on the subject of migraines.
Sacks continued to write books about neurology throughout his career. His most famous books include Awakenings, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and An Anthropologist on Mars.
Sacks's books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. His work has been praised for its clarity, compassion, and humanity.
Sacks died in New York City in 2015 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, Kate Edgar.
