Conan is a barbarian from the fictional land of Cimmeria. He is a skilled warrior and adventurer, and has traveled the world in search of fortune and glory. Conan is a complex character, and his stories often explore themes of violence, morality, and the human condition.

The Comic Books

Conan the Barbarian first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1970, in a series written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith. The series was a critical and commercial success, and helped to introduce Conan to a new generation of readers.

Thomas and Windsor-Smith's Conan was a faithful adaptation of Howard's original stories. The series was full of action and adventure, and it captured the character's savage nature.

In 1975, Thomas and Windsor-Smith left the Conan series. They were replaced by a series of other writers and artists, including John Buscema, Ernie Chan, and Mike Ploog. These creators continued to produce high-quality Conan stories, and the series remained popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The Films

In 1982, Conan the Barbarian was adapted into a feature film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was directed by John Milius, and it was a critical and commercial success.

Schwarzenegger's Conan was a more muscular and action-oriented version of the character than Thomas and Windsor-Smith's Conan. However, the film remained faithful to the spirit of Howard's original stories.

In 1984, a sequel to Conan the Barbarian was released, titled Conan the Destroyer. The film was directed by Richard Fleischer, and it starred Schwarzenegger, Grace Jones, and Wilt Chamberlain. Conan the Destroyer was not as well-received as the first film, but it was still a commercial success.

In 1997, a third Conan film was released, titled Conan the Adventurer. The film was directed by John McTiernan, and it starred Ralf Moeller. Conan the Adventurer was a critical and commercial failure, and it marked the end of the Conan film franchise.

The Legacy of Conan

Conan the Barbarian is one of the most popular and enduring fictional characters of all time. The character has been featured in numerous comic books, novels, films, and other media. Conan has also inspired a wide range of merchandise, including toys, games, and clothing.

Conan's popularity is due in part to his unique character. Conan is a barbarian, but he is also a hero. He is a skilled warrior and adventurer, but he is also a complex and thoughtful character. Conan's stories often explore themes of violence, morality, and the human condition.

Conan is also a product of his time. The character was created in the 1930s, during a time of economic depression and social unrest. Conan's stories reflected the fears and anxieties of the time. However, Conan's stories also offered a message of hope. Conan is a survivor, and his stories show that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a better future.
