Guards! Guards! is a fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, the eighth book in the Discworld series. It was first published in 1989. The novel follows the adventures of Captain Vimes, the commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, as he investigates a series of murders and uncovers a plot to overthrow the city.
The novel is set in the city of Ankh-Morpork, a sprawling metropolis located on the Discworld, a flat world carried on the back of four giant elephants that stand on the back of a giant turtle. The City Watch is a small and underfunded force, but Vimes is determined to make it a professional and effective organization. He is assisted by Sergeant Colon, a veteran of the Watch who is more interested in eating and drinking than in fighting crime, and Corporal Carrot, a six-foot-tall dwarf who is new to the Watch and eager to prove himself.
As Vimes investigates the murders, he uncovers a plot to overthrow the city by a group of nobles and merchants. The plotters are led by Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, who is a ruthless and ambitious man. Vimes and the Watch must race against time to stop the plotters and save the city.
