Saint Patrick of 1887: The Life and Legacy of John Melley
John Melley was born in Ireland in 1857. He immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a child, and grew up in New York City. He attended St. John's College in Fordham, New York, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1887.
Father Melley's first assignment was as assistant pastor at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. He quickly became known for his devotion to the poor and his work with immigrants. He founded the St. Vincent de Paul Society in New York City, and served as its president for many years. He also founded the Catholic Home Bureau for Dependent Children, which provided care for orphaned and abandoned children.

In 1895, Father Melley was appointed pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Montreal, Canada. He served there for 15 years, and during that time he oversaw the construction of a new church building. He also founded the St. Patrick's Orphanage, which provided care for over 1,000 children.
In 1910, Father Melley was appointed auxiliary bishop of New York City. He served in that role for 23 years, and during that time he was responsible for overseeing the construction of many new churches and schools in the diocese.
Bishop Melley retired in 1933, and he died in 1940. He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1987.
